If you’re like a lot of people, you probably have your favorite dishes at the restaurants where you eat. You may not even read the menu and look for other things. Little India wants to invite you to come out for an excellent evening of dining and to try our Malai Kofta. It’s a vegetarian specialty that will fill you up and be a switch from typical dishes like Chicken Tikka Masala.
Malai Kofta – A Vegetarian Alternative to Meatballs
Found in most Indian vegetarian restaurants, Kofta is usually made with paneer, a type of Indian cheese, potatoes and other vegetables. These ingredients are mixed with spices, then formed into a ball. The balls are fried, then tossed in a sauce of some kind. At Little India, we use a Malai sauce. Kofta should be crisp on the outside but melt in the mouth.
What Is Malai?
Malai means cream. Typically, it’s made by heating non-homogenized, whole milk to a little below boiling for an hour. When the milk cools, the fat and proteins that congeal on the top are removed. The leftover liquid is the malai. At Little India of Denver, we use coconut cream in our malai, along with plenty of spices and seasonings.
What to Eat With Malai Kofta?
Malai Kofta is usually served with Indian bread, such as naan, paratha or roti. Naan is a leavened flatbread, thick and delicious, traditionally baked in the tandoori oven. Roti is an unleavened flatbread that is considered very traditional. Paratha is a whole-wheat flatbread that is like layered roti. If you prefer rice, basmati goes well with Malai Kofta.
The appetizers at Little India are top-notch and a great way to start your meal. Tandoori wings would be a nice starter with a salad, but if you’re going for a vegetarian meal, go with the samosas or Pakora Masala. If you’re concerned about the spiciness of the meal, order a lassi, a yogurt-based drink designed to cool the palate.
You’ll want to save room for dessert. Kulfi, an Indian-style ice cream, comes in pistachio and mango flavors. It’s really a treat, even when it’s cold outside. Kheer is a classic rice pudding, sprinkled with almonds and pistachios. You’ll enjoy a bowl of it as the finale to a wonderful meal. If you’re looking for something a little lighter, the Mango Custard features fruit in a delicious sauce.
