Summer is in full swing. Are you looking for a light but flavorful dish to add to your repertoire this summer? You’ll love Little India‘s Gobi Masala, one of the healthiest Indian dishes we offer, while also being one of the most flavorful vegetable dishes on our menu.
What is Gobi Masala?
Gobi means cauliflower and masala refers to a blend of spices, so on its most basic level, Gobi Masala is just cauliflower cooked in spices. However, those who love Indian food will tell you that it’s much more than that! Gobi Masala, which is also sometimes referred to as cauliflower curry, is made by sauteing oil, onions, tomatoes, spices, and a dash of cream to make a rich, flavorful sauce, and then adding cauliflower and cooking until the vegetable is tender. The word “Masala” refers to the blend of spices, which can include ginger, garlic, cumin, turmeric, and cayenne. This flavorful dish is also often made with potatoes, “Alu,” or a variety of vegetables, as you’ll find at Little India of Denver in Colorado.
Why is Cauliflower Common in Indian Food?
You’ll find that a lot of the dishes of India, especially vegetarian dishes, include cauliflower. Why is cauliflower so common in Indian cuisine? Although cauliflower circled the world throughout civilized human history, from Ancient Rome to the Middle East only to be reintroduced into Europe again during the Middle Ages, it wasn’t introduced into Indian cuisine until the British brought it over in 1822.
Since then, cauliflower has become a staple in Indian dining. You’ll find it as the main ingredient of many dishes, such as Gobi Masala, as well as a staple ingredient in mixed vegetarian dishes, such as Alu Gobi (potatoes and cauliflower). More recently, cauliflower has become a favorite among many dieters and health food aficionados for its low carb and high fiber content.
