What Is Chicken Curry?
Curry is possibly the best known, not to mention one of the most popular, dishes of India. Curry is the name of a tomato-based sauce with a particular blend of spices, which can vary between regions and even between families, but typically consists of a mix of onions, peppers, garlic, ginger, turmeric, coriander, and cumin. This sauce can be used to prepare many different types of meat, but we’re partial to our chicken curry, which is why it’s the featured dish of the season.
Because of the variation in different curry sauces, you may find that each Indian restaurant has a slightly different taste to their curry. Whether you’re a connoisseur or a beginner when it comes to Indian food, you should definitely stop in and try our curry. There’s a reason why Little India has been voted the best Indian food in Denver for so many years running!
The History of Curry
If you noticed that curry doesn’t look like a very Indian word compared to the rest of the items on our menu, you’re right. Europeans hundreds of years ago named curry, probably based on a local word for a specific kind of spiced sauce, a “kari.” Europeans brought curry home with them in the 14th century, and as a result, it has changed a lot over the years. The curry you get in the American South will be very different than what you’re served in an Indian restaurant.
Curry is thought to be thousands of years old, making it one of the oldest dishes still in existence. Archaeological finds in India, dating to around 4,000 years ago, have shown evidence of some of the same spices that are used in curry, embedded in human teeth as well as their cookware. Curry has evolved, as new foods such as peppers and chiles became available around the world, but the foundation for the curry seems to date back to this time.
